Walking Routes

Outdoor Activity Disclaimer

Last updated: March 2026

Please read before using any walking route on this site. Cornwall’s coastal and moorland terrain can be unpredictable. Route information on Secrets of Cornwall is provided in good faith but is not a substitute for proper navigation, appropriate equipment, and your own risk assessment on the day.

Accuracy of Route Information

Walking routes, distances, durations, ascent figures, difficulty ratings, and descriptions published on Secrets of Cornwall are based on available information at the time of writing and are intended as general guidance only. They are not professionally surveyed measurements.

Trail conditions change regularly due to:

  • Coastal erosion and path diversions
  • Seasonal vegetation and mud
  • Storm damage and temporary closures
  • Livestock and agricultural activity
  • Tidal variations on coastal routes

Always check the current status of a route before setting out. The South West Coast Path Association and Cornwall Council’s Rights of Way team maintain up-to-date information on diversions and closures.

Difficulty Ratings

Our difficulty ratings (Easy / Moderate / Challenging) are subjective assessments based on typical conditions and average adult fitness. They are not a guarantee of the experience you will have. A route rated Easy may feel challenging in wet conditions, high winds, or if members of your group have limited mobility. A route rated Challenging may feel manageable to an experienced hill walker.

Do not rely solely on our rating to assess whether a walk is suitable for you.

Your Responsibility

You undertake any walk entirely at your own risk. Before setting out, you should:

  • Check the weather forecast — Cornwall’s weather changes rapidly. Check Met Office on the day.
  • Carry a physical map and compass (or downloaded offline map) — do not rely solely on phone signal for navigation
  • Wear appropriate footwear — walking boots with ankle support are strongly recommended on coastal and moorland routes
  • Bring sufficient food, water, and layers for the duration of the walk plus contingency time
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return
  • Assess the suitability of the route for the fitness and ability of all members of your group, including children and dogs
  • Check tide times for any tidal sections of coastal routes

Navigation

Route maps on walk pages are provided via Komoot embeds and are for reference only. They are not authoritative OS maps. Always cross-reference with an Ordnance Survey map (Explorer series 1:25,000 is recommended for Cornwall walks).

Phone signal is unreliable or absent on many of Cornwall’s coastal and moorland routes. Download any digital maps for offline use before you leave.

Coastline and Cliff Safety

Cornwall’s coastal paths pass close to cliff edges. Please:

  • Keep well back from cliff edges, especially in wet or windy conditions
  • Never climb down cliffs to reach a beach — use designated paths
  • Take particular care with children and dogs near cliff edges
  • Be aware that cliff paths can be slippery after rain

In an Emergency

🚨 Call 999 — ask for Police or Coastguard for coastal emergencies

For coastal emergencies in Cornwall, the HM Coastguard is your first point of contact. In remote areas with no phone signal, a whistle blast pattern of six blasts per minute is the universal distress signal.

Limitation of Liability

Sharkfin Media and Secrets of Cornwall accept no responsibility or liability for any injury, loss, or damage (including death) sustained while undertaking any walk or outdoor activity described on this website. This includes, without limitation, any injury caused by reliance on route descriptions, distance or duration estimates, difficulty ratings, or any other information published here.

Use of any route information on this site is entirely at your own risk.
