Cornwall Air Quality Today

Cornwall generally enjoys some of the best air quality in England thanks to its coastal location and prevailing Atlantic winds. Most days, the European Air Quality Index reads Good (below 20) across the county. Occasional moderate readings can occur during still, warm weather or rare Saharan dust events.

The European AQI combines readings of PM2.5 (fine particles), PM10 (coarse particles), nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and sulphur dioxide into a single number. Readings below 20 are Good, 20 to 40 is Fair, 40 to 60 is Moderate, 60 to 80 is Poor, and above 80 is Very Poor. Only sensitive groups need take precautions above 40.

Air quality in Cornwall is rarely poor. The worst readings tend to occur during prolonged heatwaves when continental air masses bring stagnant conditions, or during occasional Saharan dust plumes that can push PM10 levels up. Winter bonfire smoke and agricultural burning can also cause localised dips.
